The global importance of SIL (Safety Integrity Levels) has grown substantially in the oil/gas, petrochemical and other process industries over the last 10 years. However, for many end users, systems integrators, and product vendors, SIL is still a somewhat ambiguous concept that often is misinterpreted and incorrectly implemented. In order to fully understand SIL and its implications, it is important to grasp the overarching concept known as Functional Safety, and how it applies to Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) within the process industries. Click here to read the full article. SIL 102: Can a Fire and Gas System Be Considered a Safety Instrumented System? There has been much industry debate over the categorization of Fire and Gas Systems (FGS) as Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), especially as the concept of functional safety matures in the marketplace. Fire and gas detection field devices and technologies are fundamentally different from other forms of plant instrumentation. Click here to read the full article. SIL 103: SIL Certification Demystified Confusion over SIL certification abounds. The IEC 61508 and 61511 standards omit specific requirements regarding SIL certification, inevitably leading to a variety of interpretations. Unfortunately, confusion has been exacerbated by the plethora of agencies, consultants, and product manufacturers who publish conflicting information. With so many inconsistencies in the marketplace, how does an end-user or integrator make sense of what is being communicated and make an educated and reasonable decision? FM Approves Breakthrough FL4000 Multi-Spectral Infrared (MSIR) Flame Detector Fire monitoring and detection is one of the single most important safety challenges in all facilities involved with the production, refining and distribution of oil, natural gas and petrochemicals. Fire is also a critical threat in many other industries, including automotive, food/beverage, pharmaceuticals, pulp/paper, printing, textiles, warehousing and more. Our advanced FL4000 Multi-Spectral Infrared (MSIR) Flame Detector has now been certified by Factory Mutual (FM) for application in these types of hazardous environments. Maintaining Catalytic Combustible Gas Detectors In oil / gas and petrochemical production, refining, transportation and distribution facilities, safety is always of paramount concern due to the combustible nature of hydrocarbon-based products. All such facilities must install combustible gas monitoring systems to protect people and equipment. After selecting and installing catalytic bead sensors, maintenance is an ongoing task that requires periodic attention to ensure a safe work environment. Click here to read the full article. Protecting Natural Gas Pipeline Compressor Stations Pipelines delivering
natural gas from drilling production sites to metropolitan areas for consumption
are common in many regions around the globe. Some of these pipelines stretch
thousands of miles, and remote gas compressor stations are necessary to
keep the gas moving efficiently to its final destination. Each station house
may have from one to several large gas compression engines that operate
24-hours a day at thousands of horsepower per compressor unit. Detecting Hydrogen Fires Hydrogen fires emit large amounts of UV and IR radiation and almost no visible light radiation. Detecting a hydrogen fire is difficult due to mostly an invisible flame. Click here to learn how you can detect hydrogen fires. MOS Sensors Meet ISA H2S Standard ISA Performance Standard ISA S92.0.01, Part 1 ö 1998, replaces ISA-S12-15, Part 1 ö 1990 and implements stringent performance requirements on toxic gas detectors. This is currently the only performance standard for toxic gas detection instruments. In fact, General Monitorsā Controllers, Smart Sensors and Intelligent Sensors using MOS technology are the only H2S gas detectors tested and verified to meet these standards by Factory Mutual (FM) to the best of our knowledge.
